A beta version of a virus detector for home users is available, with the manufacturer claiming that it cuts down on bandwidth usage without compromising on the ability to spot malware.BitDefender’s QuickScan makes use of ‘in-the-cloud’ scanning to determine if files accessed by running processes are malicious. It scans for patterns and virus signatures already known as threats.
“Unlike traditional online scanners, Quickscan no longer requires the virus engines, or any virus definition updates to be downloaded onto your computer,” says Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender Chief Technology Officer. “The scanning engines reside on BitDefender servers, with your computer sending only the relevant bits of suspicious files for analysis. With this method, we hope to achieve a significant increase in speed over traditional online scanning solutions.”
BitDefender plans to integrate the technology behind QuickScan into its other products as well after beta testing is complete.
