Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Apple’s next iPhone are both expected to feature wireless charging, claims a new DigiTimes report.
For the Galaxy S4, it’s anticipated Samsung will adopt Qi wireless charging technology from the Wireless Power Consortium. However, DigiTime’s undisclosed sources forewarn the S4 might not come with the capability inbuilt; rather, you’d buy a replacement back to be used with a charging pad, as can be done with Nokia’s Lumia 820.
Currently, Nokia, LG, Sony, HTC and Motorola are members of the Wireless Power Consortium. Given Samsung is the largest maker of mobiles in the world, their adoption of Qi may result in it becoming the wireless charging standard for smartphones, dismissing those promoted by the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA). Interestingly, Samsung is a member of the competing A4WP standard, along with Qualcomm, TI, Broadcom and others.
Looking to keep up with Samsung, Apple is likely to develop its own wireless charging technology. It remains unknown if Apple will integrate wireless charging into its next iPhone or if they will make it possible by offering an optional accessory.
Fortunately the case of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 will be resolved when Samsung unveils the device on March 14. Just a few days now.
