As Sony pumps up 3D TV arch rival Panasonic, has confirmed that they wil launch a 50-inch, 1080p 3D plasma in 2010. The new TV will be revealed at the CEATEC show in Japan next month.

Panasonic  claims that their new 50-inch 3D model evolved from the 3D plasma home theater system it introduced in 2008, which consists of a 103-inch plasma and a Blu-ray player. Panasonic also expects 50-inch screens to “become the most popular size for home theaters.”

The new Panasonic TV still requires viewers to wear  “active shutter” 3D glasses. These glasses switch in sync with the TV so that the right eye sees the right image and the left eyes sees the left image.

In order to view 3D images, you’ll also need a Blu-ray player and discs that support the 3D format.

Sony recently announced big plans for 3D in 2010, including its first 3D-compatible Bravia LCD.

Sony says a firmware upgrade will also bring 3DTV support to all existing PS3 games. You’ll need 3D glasses and any 3D-enabled TV to enjoy this new game mode. The PS3 sends the 3D content out over HDMI and then the TV syncs it with the 3D glasses.
