TDK confirmed this week it is hard at work on a 200GB Blu-Ray Disk.
TDK demonstrated a 100GB BD prototype in May 2005. The 100GB disc contains four data-storage layers, and the new 200GB version is expected to consist of four double-sided layers, which will yield four times the capacity of today’s BDs.
The Register reports the disk is expected to come to market next year, though it adds that 50GB BD-R and BD-RE discs are not yet shipping, with the current emphasis on single-layer, 25GB product.
TDK simply said it was in the process of developing such a part, and didn’t even hint when the prototype might appear, let alone commercially available product, according to the Register.
