Back in January, it looked like 2017 might finally be the year of the foldable smartphone. However, after the warm reception that Samsung got to the Galaxy S8’s new Infinity Display, it looks like the smartphone vendor will be clinging to the form-factor we’ve come to know for a little longer.
Comments made by Kim Tae-woong – Samsung Display’s principal engineer – to The Korea Herald suggest that the rising demand and warm reception towards AMOLED-based bezel-free displays have taken the pressure off the company’s efforts to bring a profitable foldable phone to market.
“The technology is expected to be mature around 2019,” Tae-woong said.
He says that there are still some technical challenges remain, and speculates that single-sided foldable phones will likely make their way to the market ahead of multifoldable or double-sided ones.
