Nintendo is set to follow up on the successful retro NES Mini video game console released last year with a new version of the Super NES.
First released in Australia 25 years ago, the SNES will receive the same ‘Nintendo Classic Mini’ treatment as the NES, featuring pre-installed games and compatibility with high definitions TVs using HDMI.
21 games are pre-installed on the SNES Mini, including entries in classic series like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart. The console also comes with the previously unreleased sequel to the original Star Fox game.
Unlike the NES Mini, which was bundled with one controller and had additional controllers available for sale separately, Nintendo is highlighting the range of multiplayer games on the SNES Mini by packing in two controllers.
The NES Mini sold 2.3 million units before being discontinued in April, with rumours at the time indicating production of the SNES Mini was the main reason Nintendo had discontinued the highly successful retro console.
Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System will be available on September 30 for RRP $119.95, slightly higher than the $99.95 RRP of the NES Mini, but with the additional value of a second controller included. A USB AC adapter is also required to power the console, with a Nintendo-branded adapter available for RRP $19.95.
