Following a suite of other commercial companies, and a successful pilot phase, Ford has equipped its designers with Microsoft’s HoloLens to create vehicles in augmented reality (AR).
Using the HoloLens, Ford’s car designers can now quickly make changes to car, truck and SUV designs. Individuals are able to view the amendments on top of an existing vehicle, which is a revolutionary breakthrough compared to the clay model approach traditionally associated with car design.
Whilst Ford is said to still be using some clay models, the HoloLens has enabled designers to augment additional 3D car models without having to build each design prototype with clay.

The move follows gradual uptake by businesses to integrate VR and AR into their internal processes. Some companies are using Microsoft’s HoloLens for training purposes.
The transition demonstrates the versatility of such devices across both the consumer and business environment.
Over the past year, Microsoft’s HoloLens has been expanding into various commercial markets, inclusive of companies such as; NASA, Volvo, Lowe’s, Audi, and Volkswagen.
Reports state Microsoft is scheduled to hold a Windows Mixed Reality launch event on October 3rd in San Francisco. Commentators are not expecting to see a successor to the HoloLens, instead, betting on learning more about the types of apps and games soon to arrive to Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality Headsets.
The marketplace for such devices has heated up, with companies such as Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo, and Asus all offering their own models – some starting from as little as US$299.
Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Headsets are set to be available the same day the company unveils its Windows 10 Fall Creators Update with Mixed Reality support, on October 17th.
