Apple is said to be working with Japan Display on flexible screens that would be suitable for a future iPhone.
Consisting of a flexible LCD panel protected by plastic, the screen technology can bend and flex and would make a significant contribution to a smartphone designed with these features in mind.
Apple’s chief rival Samsung has taken the lead in curving the sides of its Galaxy Note and Galaxy Edge designs.
Given that the curved screen is going to be behind glass, it’s clear that Apple is doing some long-term planning, either for new designs on the high-end handsets and a return to the LCD technology it has perfected, or a potential follow-up to the lower-priced iPhone SE in 2018 which had a plastic-based LCD assembly.
