New smartcards to rid the need for passwords.”You are your password”
New smartcards to rid the need for passwords, meaning a boom time for online commerce.
Tired of signing into websites and remembering a slew of passwords and user names for each?
Well, tire no longer as new technology could spell the end for the web of account sign ins and passwords consumer are forced to create if US government has their way.
A single smartcard or fingerprint reader would allow consumer zip from site to site unhindered, under proposals from the U.S. Commerce Dept.
“You are your password in this system,” says John Clippinger, from Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society.
“It will be far more efficient and you’ll control it much more.”
This could also mean a boon for e-commerce making online purchases far safer and easier to perform with a single swipe between consumers making vast e-purchases.
Although it is still not clear how many companies are willing to sign up to the card scheme in the US, the benefits for business are tenfold and if successful there could be transferred worldwide in a matter of months.
“There’s so much that could be done if we could trust transactions more,” says Ari Schwartz, an Internet policy adviser.
